I loved Ash Princess so much I was almost afraid to read this sequel in case it was disappointing or, as happens with so many other series, the author ruins the characters and relationships forged in the first book. But this lived up to my hopes in every way! Theodosia becomes a true queen, with all the powers and burdens that brings. Theo's relationships with Blaise, Artemesia, and Heron grows and deepens, as does her relationship with Prince Soren.

Theodosia and her companions (three Astrean Guardians with the powers of Air, Water and Earth + Soren the Crown Prince of the Kalovaxians who also happens to be Theo's love interest) join with the pirate Dragonsbane (Theo's aunt). Dragonsbane takes them to Sta'Crivero, rich neighboring kingdom whose corrupt elderly king is only interested in how he can use her situation for profit. A sea of suitors compete for Theo's hand in marriage (and 1/2 her kingdom) while Theo fights against accepting a forced marriage for political reasons. Each of them struggle with the demons of their past and what they must now do now to regain Astrea. As the group navigates a sea of viperous suitors and tries to aid the starving Astrean refugees in Sta'Crivero, brilliant writing conveys their internal fears that they will become what they loathed in their ruthless parents. Does the end ever justify the mean? Or is empathy just a weakness that must be set aside for the greater good? There are twists and turns that had me cheering with excitement one minute and then shocked and despairing the next, but it is a ride worth taking. We see Erik and his mother Hoa again, and new surprising details of their identity is revealed. Crescentia is back and her transformation makes her into an intriguing and frightening enemy. Soren's political and military genius is put to use as tries to makes restitution for his past and show his love and loyalty to Theo. I loved watching their relationship blossom in this book. Theo finds new allies and moves closer to retaking Astrea.

I can't wait for the conclusion to this series!

Lady Smoke was high on my most anticipated list and it didn’t disappoint. If you loved Ash Princess, you’ll love this one, too.

Lady Smoke starts off right where Ash Princess left off. Theo, Blaise, Heron, and Artemisia are on Dragonsbane’s boat. Soren is there, too, but is a prisoner. Theo is having nightmares about Cress and doesn’t know what to do about the Kaiser. She knows she needs to get Astrea back, but she’s unsure how to go about it. She’s also starting to feel more fire and wakes up one night with burn marks on her sheet. Blaise is having trouble controlling his gift and asks Artemisia to kill him if he loses all control.

Dragonsbane has an idea to help Theo create an army. She is to marry into power with another country and use their combined armies to beat the Kaiser. This idea obviously bothers Theo. She has feelings for both Blaise and Soren. But she also isn’t sure what else to do. She agrees to go to Sta’Criveran. King Etristo has agreed to host anyone interested in marrying Theo. The King is mostly interested in money. The Kaiser has a bounty on Theo and Soren’s heads, but King Etristo knows he can get more from helping her. Theo also finds a way to get Soren freed and he becomes one of her advisors.

In Sta’Criveran, Theo and her group are given everything they could need. The palace is beautiful and the King is very rich. But they soon find out that there is a refugee camp with people being starved. Theo wants to help them in any way that she can. But she must stay at the palace and meet with the suitors. During this time, people start dying and it’s believed that the Kaiser found them. There are multiple betrayals and Theo must find a way to create an army right away.

“Some things are worth fighting for even when the fight seems hopeless.”

There is a lot of fighting and action, but there is a growing friendship between Artemisia and Theo that I really liked. I’m still team Soren (sorry Blaise), so I was happy to see Theo and Soren getting to know each other again. And Erik appears in the book which made me very happy. I don’t want to get into much else because I want the readers to experience everything themselves. I was so happy to get back into this world (not that it’s a good one) with these characters. Ash Princess was a top ten book for me last year and I loved Lady Smoke just as much.

One thing that really stood out to me what Theo finding her strenght, even when she was unsure. And there were multiple times that she stood up for women that I really appreciated.

“I hope you come to see that a woman can wield power beyond what’s between her legs–for your daughter’s sake if nothing else.”

Warnings for abuse, fighting/violence, death, murder, slavery. Like Ash Princess, this is a book with some dark themes.

I ordered this book on the day it was released - and was not disappointed. I'm still trying to process the ending. Lady Smoke had me glued to every page. It seems unfair that the next book will not be released for another year! Again, I'm sure it will be worth the wait!
I love this series. I can’t stop reading it. Then I have to wait for the next book. I would recommend this series to everyone. It’s great reading.
This was a very intriguing-- and at times heartbreaking-- book that left me unable to put the book down. Lots of character development and I love how the author builds on the characters and makes them more 3D, especially with their flaws. It makes them more realistic in an unrealistic setting. I can't wait for the next book!
I was worried thia one wouldn't live up to the first book, but I am happy to say that is not the case. I don't want to say too much to give away the excitement or the twists and turns of this amazing story. All I can say is I loved this story almosy as much as the first. Spring 2020 is too far away to see the epic conclusion of this story. I will say I am Team Soren (sorry Blaise)!
