A Man of Shadows eBook Jeff Noon

I'm a huge Jeff Noon fan and I'm excited about his new series of novels. I'm also a fan of the classic detective novel and I liked how this blended Noon's creative style with the hard-boiled detective novel. It has elements of fantasy so you must be able to accept a bit of magical realism to appreciate the book.

A Man of Shadows eBook Jeff Noon Reviews

Jeff Noon is a great author. All of his books are extremely readable.
An excellent book and excellent prompt delevery.
This book started off good, but then it dragged on. A lot of fluff to make the Book longer for no reason, unless you got paid by the page. I was very disappointed in this novel because I thought it was going to be epic.
You definately feel the clock lag on this advurt, every time i set my clock to a man of shadows i feel the hours slip away. The political views on this timeline can sweep you away if your not careful. Or perhaps its already too late? Such is the mystery in any noon novel. If your asking yourself what, when, where or why your simply asking the wrong questions. This isint a blue lullaby people, its a hard yellow so buckle up and enjoy the crash ride into the dayzone
Interesting at first, then very very very very long winded and repetitive descriptions that were repetitive in the way they restated things they had previously described in depth in previous repetitive passages....if you get my drift. The book could have been 1/3rd as long as it was. Not really sci fi at all but more of a grotesque Bradbury like dark psychological fantasy/ murder mystery. I loved Vurt, read it when it first came out, so had high hopes but this was just ok.
Noon invites readers into a surreal, bifurcated city. In one half, "the sky, the real sky, which even the oldest residents cannot remember seeing, is hidden behind a vast tangled web of neon signs, fluorescent images, fiery lamps, gas flames, polished steel struts, and decorative mosaics of glass;" in the other, the lights have burnt out, leaving inhabitants to sleep--or worship the darkness. Between lies the dusk, an ambiguous swath of mist, memories, monsters, and magic.

A characteristically tortured--and drunk--private eye searches for a the beautiful daughter of a city father (sounds vaguely familiar, right?). You can see this novel as an allegory for many things, the blending of literary forms and genres, the temporal dislocation of late capitalism, even the inevitability of one's fate (astute readers will see some PKD-like predestination play here), but any one reading seems reductive. The real power of this novel comes from the dreamlike intensity of Noon's images and prose, which, like the heart of his city, are shrouded in mist.
Jeff Noon returns within a new crazy beautiful dangerous future....no Vurt here, but you'll still feel at home. Home where the is only ever light, constant and unforgiving....Night.....and Dusk...where time may not properly exist....

A must for Noon fans and those with a head for adventure, danger and an appreciation of language as a living organism.
