The Good Die Twice Chase Dagger Mysteries Lee Driver 9780966602111 Books

Great read.

This one starts with a grey hawk witnessing a murder. Well the hawk doesn't care about a murder but Sara Morningstar sure does.

Sara is the partner of Chase Dagger a PI. She's also a shapshifter.

Chase has a past thats pretty much a lie. He has capabilities which come in real handy.

Chase also has a McCaw named Eistein and a sometimes girlfriend, Sheilah Monroe, who'd like to marry him.

He doesn't want to marry her though and wonders how the hell he got engaged to this spoiled brat of a woman who's Father has more money than God.

The murder Sara witnessed really throws them for a loop because the murdered woman died five years ago.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has murder, Chase, Sara, Einstein, the dead woman Rachel Tyler, her millionaire husband, his two sons, the older brother Eric's wife Edie, Nick the younger brother with a past, a reporter who's Sheila Monroe's go for, a plot involving Rachel as a model, a Rachel who was a really good woman, three men with greed and murder on their minds, diamonds, a expert from Austrailia and Chase and Sara in a race to figure it out.

Five Stars.

The Good Die Twice Chase Dagger Mysteries Lee Driver 9780966602111 Books Reviews

Found the author entertaining! Has a great sense of how to keep the reader involved in the atory. A definite page turner. I got this book as a free download from bookbub and wish there was more by this author for free, however I must add that the price of the other books written, is well worth it for the amount of entertainment and enjoyment you will receive from reading this.
I probably wouldn't have bought this book if it hadn't been listed for $.99, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance! It was worth every penny and now I want to read all the other books in the series. Chase Dagger, Sara and Einstein make a great detective team with good character development and budding chemistry, and the mystery was a fun page turner, if a tad predictable. Slight spoiler - while I'm a tad creeped out by the age difference (he's 35, she's 18) I'm hoping the author will give her a few years to grow up before taking the storyline that way. Can we get all of these on please?
The concept, the plot and the characters looked very good. Then I read it. Parts of it were quite good, but like an omelette a few really rotten eggs can ruin the whole thing.
An example a police officer is shot through the chest and thrown in the lake. He knows who did, but doesn't tell his fellow police officers who did it, why he was there or any useful information. Why? Presumably because his friend the private detective hasn't figured out all the details yet. The same set of killers, who were also witnessed at another killing, are spotted at a party. Are they confronted? Are the authorities called? Is backup help from friends called in? No, the heroine simply turns into a hawk so she can eavesdrop better. The same set of killers beat up and torture Chase Dagger. Sara, the shapeshifter, confronts them with a pistol. She shoots the rope off Chase's hands, tosses him the gun and effortlessly kicks the bad guys around. Suddenly they all escape because Chase 'suddenly bent over in pain'. Huh?
In the same fight Chase has shot one of them through the shoulder. The wounded party is out digging graves later, commenting something to the effect that "Gee, flesh wounds hurt almost as much as if I were really shot." Eh?
I can tolerate holes in the plot, poor characterization, and villains behaving umbelievably. I cannot tolerate the fight scenes.
Innocent Sara follows the drunk rich guy into his private bedroom. When she tries to leave she is grabbed. Her response elbow to stomach, 'high side kick' to chest followed by throwing him over her shoulder. Problems with this elbow strikes can only be done when extremely close. High kicks, or side kicks, can only be done at far distance. Assuming the kick was possible, the assailant would be pushed back a few inches at least and moving away from Sara. To 'throw him over her shoulder' would require superhuman stength. The fight description reminded me more of a Tom and Jerry cartoon than anything realistic.
Despite all this, the basic concept had real possibilities. Several rewrites under a brutal editor could have turned this into something quite good.
I stumbled across this book while cruising . Before I could finish I came back and ordered the other two in this series because I knew I didn't want the experience to end.(...) The first page where the hawk is introduced was the only page I had to "digest." The rest pulled me along and I read every word. In some mysteries, I skip sentences or whole sections because the writing is boring and I know it's just filler. Yes, even in the best. But Ms. Driver's writing is tight and the story is taut to the end. She reveals the culprits early, but it's still a wild ride to the last sentence. Everything is pulled together nicely. No, she doesn't wallow in the violence and I hope that doesn't change, but she describes the action sufficiently for you to understand what's happening. Violence is gratituous enough on TV and in the movies, it's nice to have a chance to use your brain to fill in the not-needed GORY details,if you must. She delivers just enough to make you feel the tension and potential. When she wants you to know a character is evil and capable of the vilest activities, you know it, believe me. Very shrewd. The bird is aptly described and becomes an interesting character. She develops the characters, gives them depth and emotion, and crafts and interesting tale. If the shape shifting seems too much, don't worry, it doesn't overtake the story. The American Indian influences are subtle, but appealing and well-done. This book does a lot and does it well plot, dialogue, intrigue, character development, sexual tension, police procedures, animal influence. The weakest character is the fiancee, but maybe there are women like that. She doesn't take away from the book, and haven't you noticed that most stories on TV have once character you just hate. So, even Sheila serves a purpose. )Enjoy the book. I am looking forward to many more "cases" with Sara, Dagger, and Einstein.
