Summoning the Night An Arcadia Bell Novel The Arcadia Bell series Jenn Bennett Books
Summoning the Night is the second book in the Arcadia Bell urban fantasy series. I enjoyed reading the first one so I dove straight into this. I like how the main characters (Cady, Lon and Jupe) have all developed since the start of the series. And the age gap romance remains strong and drama-free. But I liked this a less than the first book because I found bits of it creepy, it gave off more of a horror vibe than urban fantasy. I'm willing to admit that I'm a huge scaredy-cat, which is why I stay away from the genre in all its forms (e.g. books, movies, etc.) Maybe this was a bit darker than the first one because it's a murder mystery? It never got too much but I was still a bit nervous while reading it. And again, this is probably just me. I'm still waffling on whether I want to continue with the series because I like the characters or give up because the last two books might have a similar feel to this one.Tags : Amazon.com: Summoning the Night: An Arcadia Bell Novel (The Arcadia Bell series) (9781451620535): Jenn Bennett: Books,Jenn Bennett,Summoning the Night: An Arcadia Bell Novel (The Arcadia Bell series),Pocket Books,1451620535,Fantasy - Contemporary,Demonology,Demonology;Fiction.,Fantasy fiction,Kidnapping,Magic,Magicians;Fiction.,Occult fiction,Occult fiction.,Wizards,AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,Action & Adventure,Adventure,FICTION Fantasy Contemporary,FICTION Fantasy Urban,FICTION Romance Fantasy,Fantasy,Fiction,Fiction - Fantasy,Fiction-Fantasy,FictionAction & Adventure,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Magicians,Monograph Series, any,SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,United States
Summoning the Night An Arcadia Bell Novel The Arcadia Bell series Jenn Bennett Books Reviews
I read and really enjoyed "Kindling The Moon", the first Arcadia Bell story and I was more than a little eager to get my hands on "Summoning the Night", book #2. I can't even begin to express how \very much I loved this installment. The storyline is even more compelling and enjoyable than in the first book. This time the town is getting ready for Halloween when kids start disappearing. This has echos of the kidnappings thirty years ago. The kidnappings quickly are found to be connected in someway to the children of members of the Hellfire club. Lon and Cady are concerned for Jupe's safety and begin to investigate the kidnappings. We also get an interesting thread regarding Jupe discovering his 'knack' or magical ability.
I have to say (again, as I mentioned this in my first review) that I absolutely love Jupe. This kid steals every scene he is written into and he stole my heart as well as Cady's long ago. I love that he is a young, mixed race teenager and not a little kid. Just by that description he is a unique character. But his personality, his impulsiveness, his gentleness, his grossness...this kid in genuine. I see so much of my teenage son in him...and Jupe just feels real. Watching Cady melt over Jupe (and Lon for that matter) is one of my favorite things about these books. The main characters are all strong and well-written. I also liked getting the chance to see more of some of the side characters we don't know very well. The one that stands out in my mind most is Bob, a regular at Cady's tiki bar. Yes, the stories are darn good also, but the characters are why I want the next book to be available to read right now!
I don't want to give any details away and since I loved the book there isn't much more I can say. Fans of Kim Harrison, Patricia Briggs, and Ilona Andrews will likely adore Jenn Bennett and her Arcadia Bell series. This is another well written, finely plotted, and wholeheartedly entertaining book. I am hooked and I would like to see these books garner more of the attention I believe they deserve.
This is book two in the Arcadia Bell series. Cady is still freaked out by her new magical powers but she is getting used to having a boyfriend in Lon. And, she has completely fallen in love with Lon's son Jupe. Jupe will be turning fourteen on Halloween and seems to be developing his knack a couple of years ahead of schedule. He is developing the knack for persuasion and now both Lon and Cady are worrying about helping him use it ethically.
The big problem in this one is that it looks like a serial killer from 30 years ago is making a reappearance. Thirty years ago seven Earthbound kids were kidnapped in the days before Halloween and no trace of them was ever found. New Earthbound kids who are the descendents of the members of the Hellfire club who can transform are being kidnapped. The leader of the club wants Lon and Cady to find out who is doing the kidnapping and why. Since Jupe is in the group of kids who are targets, Lon and Cady have an additional reason to find the kidnapper.
The story was action packed and exciting. I like the way Cady is making a new family for herself with Lon and Jupe and I like how frightened she is that something will go wrong there. I really like Jupe who is a very entertaining teenager. The relationship with Lon is also going well as they play to each other's strengths.
I'll be looking forward to reading more in this series
The plot of SUMMONING THE NIGHT is not that great, but the characters are fantastic. And Jenn Bennett seems to understand what works in this series, because she takes time for the quiet moments, Arcadia and Jupe teasing one another, the sexual chemistry that's like a cherry on top of Arcadia and Lon's otherwise solid, settled relationship. This is an urban fantasy with magic and demons and incubi and all that jazz, but at heart it's a story about the three main characters becoming a family.
The plot has to do with a serial killer who's reemerged after a thirty-year hiatus, who's killing teenaged Earthbound demons - once again putting Jupe in danger. Arcadia and Lon dutifully investigate, propelling the story forward, but the murderer didn't make nearly as much of an impression on me as Ambrose Dare, the guy who asks Lon and Arcadia to hunt down the killer. Dare levels some pretty hideous threats against Arcadia. He struck me as the real villain, and I wanted to see a bigger reaction from Arcadia -- and an even bigger one from Lon.
But even if I have some quibbles with the novel, I finished it very happy. I've read a few sophomore efforts in the past few weeks, #2s in urban fantasy series that I'd been really looking forward to, that really disappointed me. This is the first one that actually satisfied. I love these characters. I love Arcadia and Lon and Jupe and I want to keep reading about them.
